Many of the students from WBA have been on an educational visit to Parliament this week to find out about how laws are made. Students were very excited about the guided tour as they saw the Palace of Westminster on the inside, including the House of Commons and the House of Lords and where the Queen sits when laws are made; also how and why she cannot go down into the House of Commons. Our thanks go to local MP David Tredinnick for making this happen, without whose support we would not have been able to take over a 100 students to Parliament.
Year11 University of Cambridge Visit
Nine of the WBA year 11 students went to the University of Cambridge in December and came away motivated about completing degrees and making applications to Oxbridge and other Russell Group Universities. Some of the students commented on how ‘normal’ the day was as they had previously had stereotypes about ‘only posh people going to Cambridge’.
BBC comes to WBA for School Report
10 students will also be taking part in a workshop with BBC journalists/producers in January to get them ready for the national BBC School Report on March 16th. Keep an eye out on our website for the report.
Royal Shakespeare Company
We have had a live stream from the Royal Shakespeare Company of Henry V and look forward to Othello and Merchant of Venice in March and April, respectively. Our year 10’s were surprised at how quickly they were able to grasp and understand Shakespearian language.
Sutton Trust/Russell Group of Universities
Last year one of our current Year 13 students made a successful application to the Sutton Trust UK Programme, and absolutely enjoyed the week he spent at the University of Edinburgh to get a taste of university life. We currently have one student who has applied the US Programme, and other students will be applying to the UK Programme later in January.
Institute of Physics STEM project
WBA has been successful in securing funding from the Institute of Physics for a STEM project that will be run by our Post-16 students to show younger students how exciting physics is.
Auditions for ‘Loserville’ start in January for students from WBA and Heathfield Acadamy. Contact Jenni Hunt for more details.
