Principal appointed for new academy

The Midland Academies Trust (MAT) has appointed Emma Merry to the role of Principal for the new Heath Lane Academy, which is set to open in September, 2016, following a national recruitment process.

The move will see Heathfield Academy, which is rated Outstanding by Ofsted, come together with William Bradford Academy – the most improved school in Leicestershire based on its GCSE results last summer where it moved from 29% achieving 5 good GCSEs including English and Maths to 50% – providing a fresh approach for 11 to 19 year olds in Earl Shilton and Barwell. The merger of the two schools and the proposal for the new Academy has now received full approval from the Department for Education and will be sponsored by North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, as part of the Midland Academies Trust.

Ms Merry currently holds the role of Interim Principal of William Bradford Academy, having been appointed in September, 2015. She has previously held a number of roles at the school, including Deputy Principal.

She will be supported by a strong team of professionals and experienced senior teams from the existing schools, Heathfield Academy and William Bradford Academy. Both schools have recently joined the Trust.

Marion Plant OBE, Chief Executive of the MAT, said: “During her time with William Bradford Academy, Emma has clearly demonstrated her vision, experience and passion and we congratulate her on her appointment and wish her well as we embark on this new era of education in Earl Shilton.

“Times of transition are always difficult, but both the Midland Academies Trust and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College will be giving her and the staff of both schools their full support for this exciting and challenging project.”

Ms Merry added: “Through the proposed new Heath Lane Academy, we have an ideal environment to help pupils to achieve their potential, both personally and academically.
“Having been with William Bradford Academy for a number of years, I am deeply passionate about providing excellent education for all in Earl Shilton and firmly believe that the new Academy will provide us with a platform to offer this.

“Through our excellent staff and leadership team, we aim to deliver quality education in a thriving Academy setting which all pupils will be proud to attend.”

The MAT was established by North Warwickshire & Hinckley College with the mission to support local schools and to help young people release their potential through excellent education.
